Weddings can be one of the most expensive events of your lifetime. While many people mistakenly believe that the amount you spend on a wedding is directly proportionate to how much you love each other, studies have shown that the opposite is actually true. Couples that spend less money on their weddings are more likely to stay together. This is important, (and exciting!) news for the frugalists out there like you and I. If you want the wedding of your dreams without breaking the bank, not only is it great for your future, but it’s also great for your wallet.
The first thing you need to do when you’re looking at saving a lot of money on your wedding is to plan. You should also evaluate your wants and realize that it’s your big day and that you should get what you want, but also while paying attention to this occasion as Something important, but your future as much more important. You should come up with a budget at first and be incredibly strict about it. Never let yourself go over budget for anything. Speaking of which, you should make yourself smaller budgets. For example, a budget for the food, entertainment, dress, etc, so that you spend your money where you most want to and designate your desired expenses in the right places. If you want to save a ton of money, do not get a wedding planner. Instead, enlist your bridesmaids and start planning early. By early, I mean super early. Like you should be planning your wedding at least a year in advance from the date so that you can find the best deals and get everything that you need done finished. The reason you don’t want to hire a wedding planner is because not only are they super expensive, but they usually make a cut of everything you spend, meaning they want the wedding to be as expensive as possible.
After you have a designated budget, find places to save the most money you can. Although you may dream of having silver dinnerware at your weddings, frivolous expenses like that will not add to how much you enjoy your wedding, or how other people see it. Instead, opt for nice looking dinnerware that won’t break the bank at either Thrift Stores, or places like Walmart. If you don’t want to have the same pieces as other people in your life that are also getting married, instead opt for simple and inexpensive DIY projects for that detailed beauty you want for your special day. You can have parties either your bridesmaids and do these projects together or enlist your future husband.
Another big way to save is to find a smaller venue, invite less people, or find a low cost venue or even a free one. Some of the best weddings are done outside and if you get married at somewhere like a friend or parents house, you’ll save even more money. Venues, other than the dress and food can be the most expensive part of a wedding so be sure to save the most by shopping around and finding the right place. The venue will make all the difference and while it’s important to save this will definitely influence the vibe of your wedding more than anything else. You should make the budget for your venue a bit more than other items on your list.
